BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LOCAL children’s writer Carol Ottley-Mitchell has added another feather to her literary cap with the Friday (Oct. 9) launch of her newest work, “Pirates at Port Royal”.
The highly anticipated second book in the Caribbean Adventure Series (CAS) takes the cast of characters to the famous Port Royal Fort in Jamaica. The action-packed plot includes a trip on a pirate ship where they will travel to the past and work alongside famous pirate captain Henry Morgan.
The first book, entitled “Adventure at Brimstone Hill”, was launched in November last year and featured the exploits of Mark, Kyle, Ingrid and Chee Chee at the Federation’s very own Brimstone Hill National Fortress Park.
Speaking to SKNVibes, Ottley-Mitchell explained that the choice of Jamaica as the second CAS location was influenced by the characters themselves.
“In the first book, Kyle expressed an interest in pirates, so from that I wanted to include that element in this story. I thought it would be a good way to attract more male readership, and Jamaica has such a rich history of piracy.”
She added: “It builds on the characters that we came to know in Book One...however, the adventure is very different and children will find it refreshing, exciting and enjoyable.”
Pirates at Port Royal is available at local bookstores and online at Amazon.com for $EC30.
Ottley-Mitchell is currently working on the third book in the series and anticipates that it would be finished within a year. She noted that she had received “lots of great feedback” and “excellent support” from the local community, which would help her to realise her other literary aspirations.
“I definitely plan to branch out in the future. I have a collection of short stories that I may publish soon and I am very open to ideas that may present themselves,” she divulged.
The author, who is also the owner of Leyton Microcomputer Services, had words of advice for young, aspiring writers.
“Writing is a journey; keep at it and give yourself a target. Usually, starting is the major stumbling block, but you have to get over that. Once you do that, everything will fall into place.”
