Shadwell to resuscitate community festival dubbed ‘Shadorama’

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Shadwell community is currently hosting a number of fundraising activities in an effort to garner cash for the rebirth of their community festival, dubbed Shadorama, to be held from November 1 to 7.

According to Winston ‘Zack’ Nisbett, advisor and consultant to the Shadwell Festival Committee, the festival which was first held 24 years ago is being celebrated under the theme “Preserve our historical and cultural heritage through educational advancement”.

Nisbett said that brining the festival back to life was the idea of himself and Carol Hanley, who saw that the community needed interjection and has expanded over the years. He added that they therefore held a meeting, formed a committee and moved on from there.

He explained that the festival is being held “to create a better environment within the community by building self esteem to have a positive impact within the community”.

The festival will include activities such as church services, food hamper distribution, clean ups, Guy Fawkes explosion, storytelling, J’Ouvert jam and the Miss Shadorama Pageant.

The fundraisers are being held in the form of breakfast sales, lunch sales, and a jam session and food fair slated for Thursday (Oct. 15) with the Grandmasters Band.

According to Nisbett, all of the festival activities would be held in Pine Garden at Shadwell on an empty lot, which they would occupy under the name “Shadwell Festival City”.

Nisbett informed that he is very impressed with the committee’s willingness and dedication as well as the work they are putting in so far. He said many sponsors also came onboard willingly, adding “it’s imperative to preserve our historical, cultural and economic fabric which to some extent binds a community together”.
