BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOLLOWING a long and successful athletics career, Jamaica’s sprint sensation, Veronica Campbell-Brown has decided to take off her spikes, signalling an end to her participation in the sports discipline.

In a social media post, Campbell-Brown reflected on her successes that span more than 20 years.

She wrote in part, “...I have climbed from a small town in Trelawny, Jamaica up the ladder of success to become one of the most decorated women in the Olympic Games and World Championships history.

“All glory to the Lord for my successes, He blessed me with the talent, the will to stay focused, and the requisite work ethics. Additionally, He placed authentic and supportive people in my life who served as pillars of strength as I maneuvered the highs and lows which littered my athletic career.”

The illustrious female sprint champion represented Jamaica at the 2000 - 2016 Olympic Games, where she claimed back-to-back 200m gold medals.

The 39-year-old Campbell-Brown won 19 combined World and Olympic Championship medals during her career.

“As I climbed, I passed the rung of hurt, that of injuries and rejection not to mention tears, however, they never quenched my aspiration to grasp the fruits of success and satisfaction. For that, I must venture to say that I am proud and grateful.

“...As I take off my spikes never to put them on again, this girl from Clarks Town walks away happy and content with a race well run,” the sprinter said.

Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holiness wished the sprinter the best in the next chapter of her life, writing in part on social media: “As she hangs up her running shoes, we tip our hats to her. Many of us recall her stunning victories, and it fills us with pride.”

He added: “VCB delighted us with her many impressive races, her passion for the sport, and her humility. With over 18 Olympic and World Championships medals, VCB is one of the most decorated female athletes.”

The Prime Minister recognised her philanthropic and advocacy work in gender equality in the sport, “and we salute her both for her athleticism and her humanity”.

VCB’s fellow sprinter, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, also commended her countrywoman and rival for leading the way for others to follow.

“Thanks for leading the way...Carrying the torch,” wrote Fraser-Pryce on Twitter.

Campbell-Brown hung up her spikes ahead of the nation's Olympic trials which got on the way yesterday (June 24).
