BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS members of the Shadwell Estate community gear up for the Shadorama Festival, a number of young ladies are preparing to compete in the Miss Shadorama Pageant which is one of the main attractions of the event.

The pageant will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Shadwell Estate and will feature five contestants.

According to the Committee’s Advisor and Public Relations Officer, Winston ‘Zack’ Nisbett, the pageant would be cultural and reminiscent of community spirit and development.

He said that the contestants, whose ages range between 12 and16, would make six appearances on the night of the show.

Nisbett said the pageant would open with a May Pole fanfare followed by the Introductory Speeches where the contestants would be dressed like plantation owners and escorted by two young men.

The next segment will see the contestants impersonating people from the community, which precedes the Talent segment that will be based on sugar.

“The contestants can come up with a drama, poetry or song but it must be centered on sugar,” Nisbett said.

For the Evening Wear segment, the contestants are required to take the national wear of St. Kitts and Nevis and add their personal design to it, while the final segment will be Question and Answer.

The contestants who will be competing for the crown and other attractive prizes are Amanny Greene (14), Alexia Farrell (12), Carol Dore (16), Natacia Claxton (13), and Shernee Morton (13).

Nisbett said that on the night of the show they would honour local druggist Agnes Skerritt for her contribution to community development and enhancement.

“She was an inspiration to people in the community. Anything that happens to anyone, she would look after them even if they didn’t have any money. She would tell them don’t worry about it,” he said.

Nisbett said they are hoping to construct a bus stop with the funds raised from the show and eventually would like to have a community centre built in the area.

He said that trophies for the contestants would be donated by Parliamentary Representative for the area, the Hon. Sam Condor.

The pageant is a part of the Shadorama Festival activities that will officially begin on Nov. 1 and end on Nov. 7.

The festival is being held under the theme “Preserve our historical and cultural heritage through educational advancement”.
