Basseterre, St. Kitts (March 08, 2004): Nutrition advice, tasty dishes and video presentations are among attractions of the inaugural Nutrition Open Day to be held at the Newtown Community Centre.

The Open Day, which takes place on Friday, March 19 will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Coordinated by the Health Promotion Unit of the Ministry of Health and Environment, the day promises to be one that will equip residents with the tools to eat more healthily.

Visitors will be able to see examples of nutritious vegetables in stalls and check their body mass index (BMI) which can assess whether one is at a healthy weight, overweight or obese.

An official from the Health Promotion Unit informed that various departments were invited to assist in the venture.  These include the Department of Agriculture which will run the vegetable stall and the Home Economics Centres of the high schools will provide the dishes.
Nutrition Open Day is part of Nutrition Week which runs from Sunday, March 14 to Saturday, March 20, also coordinated by the Health Promotion Unit.

Other activities to take place during the week include Eating Healthy Day on Tuesday, March 16 when the public will be encouraged to make more nutritious food choices as motivation to do so more often in the future.  There will also be a Dietary Counselling Day as well as talks is health centres and schools.
