BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - HAITIANS are now in mourning after the country’s President, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated at home last evening (July 6) and his wife remains hospitalised after being attacked by an unknown group.
Confirmation of the assassination was made by the country’s interim Premier, Claude Joseph, in a statement today,
Haiti has seen violence and clashes over the last several years, prompting calls by CARICOM for elections in the nation of over 11 million people.
Moïse's tenure as President of the French-speaking nation has been rocky with allegations of corruption in office since 2017.
Premier Joseph, in a statement, said democracy would win.
Elections are scheduled for later this year.
More on this assassination as information becomes available.
