BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MEMBERS of the United Nationals Security Council are the latest in the strongest terms to condemn the assassination of Haiti’s President, Jovenel Moïse.
A group of unknown gunmen reportedly storm Moise’s home late Tuesday evening (July 6) or early the following morning killing him and leaving his wife severely injured.
The UN Security Council convened a special meeting yesterday (July 7) to discuss the situation, and in a statement expressed their condolences to his family and the Haitian people while calling for “the perpetrators of this abhorrent crime to be swiftly brought to justice”.
Media reports out of Port-Au-Prince suggested that the perpetrators were individuals speaking fluent English and Spanish.
“The members of the Security Council made an emphatic call on all political stakeholders in Haiti to refrain from any acts of violence and any incitement to violence. The members of the Security Council called on all parties to remain calm, exercise restraint and to avoid any act that could contribute to further instability, and expressed their steadfast support for dialogue,” the statement added.
It added: “The members of the Security Council affirmed their determination to monitor the ongoing situation in Haiti and reiterated the essential need to respect the rule of law and to ensure the security of all people and UN operations. The members of the Security Council expressed their continued solidarity with the people of Haiti”.
