CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A FOURTH former of the Charlestown Secondary School was yesterday (Oct. 13) ordered by Magistrate Yasmine Clarke to receive 12 strokes after he pleaded guilty to using an imitation firearm.

The juvenile was placed on an 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew and fined $500, which must be paid within six months or he has to spend a month in jail.

Before passing sentence, Magistrate Clarke told the boy that what he did was foolish and such act could have caused him a jail sentence of 14 years.

Meanwhile, another student, this time of the Gingerland High School, was placed on probation for two years after participating in the beating of another minor. The first former’s 18-year-old sister, Cherisia Maynard, did not get off so lightly however. The Butler’s Village resident was fined $500, which must be paid in one month or she will spend a month in prison.

Magistrate Clarke told both girls that she noticed they stood in the box laughing and failed to recognise the seriousness of the incident. Because of this attitude, she ordered them placed in the holding cell until 4:00 p.m. yesterday.

The court heard how the younger sister had a confrontation with the virtual complainant, during which she called her sister Cherisia who arrived and pulled the juvenile’s hair, slapped her and kicked her in her stomach.
