Minister responsible for Housing and Lands in Nevis Hon Malcolm Guishard.
    CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (January 11, 2006) --
Minister responsible for Lands and Housing in the Nevis Island Administration Hon Malcolm Guishard, gave the assurance on Monday January 9, 2006, that the Administration would satisfy all the applications for affordable housing on Nevis through the continued construction of houses throughout the island.
He made the comment at Church Ground where excavation work had commenced on two acres of land to make way for the third phase of the project which is scheduled to commence during the first week of February.

The intention right now is to try and satisfy all of those persons who have applied for homes and we are looking in excess of 300 persons.  It will not be done all at once but we intend to continue to construct homes over the next two or three years to ensure that everyone who needs a home can get a home.

"We will be constructing some 14 -16 houses in this area and already there is quite some interest from persons not just from the area but also by persons in the Brown Pasture/ Morning Star/ Cole Hill area,"  he said.

The Affordable Housing Project began in 2002 and according to Mr Lloyd Lescott, Manager of the Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation, at the end of 2005, they had received in excess of 400 applicants and had constructed and delivered 150 homes have so far. "People who have taken up residence have been very satisfied," he said.

A section of the two-acre area at Church Ground being cleared by heavy equipment.
The Project began with construction in Bath Village then moved to Prospect.  However, houses were also constructed in New River, Nisbetts Settlement and Eden Brown.  The project is scheduled to continue at Ramsbury, Shaws Road in Newcastle, Hanleys Road in Gingerland, Brick Kiln and Brown Hill then continue at Eden Brown.

Mr Lescott noted that although the project is opened to the public, applications from single mothers have been given priority.  The homes are available in two or three bedroom units.
