Police: No permission granted for August Monday meeting and protest

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, ST. Kitts - ON learning of a planned meeting and protest to  be staged today (Aug. 2), the High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force is warning citizens and resident of the Federation not to participate, as the event is being deemed unlawful.

“The High Command of The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has become aware of an unlawful meeting and protest being organised by a group of individuals in the Federation. The High Command wants to make it clear that no application requesting permission for any group or person to organise, coordinate and/or host any meeting or procession in any public space in Basseterre was submitted to the Commissioner of Police,” the Police High Command said in a statement.

The Federation remains under a State of Emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic and anyone interested in hosting large gatherings or events must first seek permission from the Commissioner of Police.

With no permission sought, the police said: “Any such event found to be taking place on August, Monday 02, 2021, will be considered unlawful and will be brought to an end and the persons responsible will be prosecuted.

“The Police are, therefore, appealing to the good citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis to not take part in any such unlawful event and are sending a stern warning to those who intend to.”

Police have been forced to issue a number of tickets to persons found hosting events during the recent lockdown period.

In one instance, the police had issue tickets to 12 persons who were found at a party at an undisclosed location, and the organiser was reportedly ticketed and charged.
