Caribbean Airlines nearing restructuring of operations

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO-based Caribbean Airlines (CAL) is nearing the end of its consultation process that will see its operations restructured to manage the below average demand for travel.

The airline, last month, reported TT$127 million or US$25.7 million in losses for the first quarter of this year, as a result of low demand for travel, which prompted management to restructure operations to accommodate for the low demand.

As part of the restructuring process, the airline proposed the restructuring of its business operation, temporarily laying off of staff, and a reduction of its fleet and network.

However, before the airline could have implemented any new strategy, it first had to meet with key stakeholders to determine the way forward.

The airline said in a statement that it is making “significant progress” on the consultation process.

CAl noted that the restructuring reflected the decreased size of the travel market and reduced passenger numbers “which is estimated to remain below 2019 level for the next two to three years”.

Meanwhile, the airline disclosed that over the past five weeks it met with representatives of employees across its various operations locations.

“The process was constructive and as a result the number of employees to be separated is now 280, significantly fewer than previously estimated,” the airline added.

Moreover, a further 99 staff members would be temporarily laid off for an extended period.

The airline industry was severely affected during the peak of the COVID-19 period in the region, as all territories closed their borders to inbound travellers to stem the spread of the virus.

Regional airline LIAT folded after it was cash strapped.
