Brantley calls on President Biden to remove embargo on Cuba

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - PREMIER and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mark Brantley is urging the United States Government to rethink its  embargo measures currently in place against Cuba.

This comes as a protest recently erupted in the Cuba’s capital against the dictatorship that was in place for many decades under the Castro brothers Fidel and Raul.

Raul Castro recently announced that he was taking a step back from politics.

The United States has placed an embargo on Cuba for more than 60 years, blocking food and other supplies from being shipped to the country. Also barring United States companies from transacting or establishing businesses within that country.

Addressing reporters, Premier Brantley said that those restrictive measures have only redound to hurting the ordinary Cuban people.

To this end, he urged US President “Joseph Biden to have another look and to do as his democratic predecessor did, President Barack Obama, and seek to loosen this terrible blockade off the island of Cuba”.

Describing the measure a relic of the cold war, Premier Brantley explained that a level of world history must be undertaken, especially that Germany and the United States were at war but things have since changed.

“It was, I believe, a remarkable thing that Germany and America made peace. That Germany and England and France have not only made peace, but at one point were all members of the European Union. That sworn and mortal enemies now sit at the table of brotherhood together…So, what then of Cuba?” explained Brantley.

Past US President Barack Obama had loosen several restrictions placed on the Spanish-speaking Caribbean nation. However, Former President Donald Trump reimposed new measures aimed at curtailing American dollars from flowing into that country.

Premier Brantley questioned why Cuba has not been allowed to move on and continue with its development.

“...the rest of the world, including those who waged war on others, including those who initiated the worst atrocities the world has seen, peace has been made and they now sit at the table of brotherhood. And yet, Cuba, a little off the coast of Florida, is continuing to be pressured and the Cuban people continue to be pressured in this way,” reminded Brantley.

Cuba has been one of St. Kitts and Nevis, and the wider Caribbean’s closest alley in the area of medical assistance.

The Spanish-speaking nation has provided thousands of scholarships for medical doctors and has also provided medical doctors to help Caribbean countries control the outbreak of the Coronavirus.

“I believe that all of us owe Cuba a debt of gratitude,” added Brantley.
