Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 05, 2021 (SKNIS): Young people in St. Kitts and Nevis are strongly encouraged to undertake extracurricular activities such as joining a debate team, performing social work, participating in sports, gaining an internship, and partaking in the performing arts as they are extremely useful for persons seeking an advantage in a competitive scholastic or professional field.

Wanda Hughes, Dean of the Division of Adult and Continuing Education at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC), highlighted the value of supplementary activities on the August 04, 2021 edition of ‘Working for You.’

“There was one employer who indicated that the applicants came, they all had the same certification, and all of them had done well. So, they actually looked at the extracurricular, and the decision was made, based on who had been involved in that,” Ms. Hughes stated.

“Extracurricular activities are also important when it comes to university applications because universities also look at that in determining, especially in competitive programmes, which students they are going to accept,” she added.

Scores of students at CFBC enrolled in the Supporting Advancement of Further Education (SAFE) initiative gain experience in extracurricular activities through the Volunteer Corps. Each person is required to complete four hours of community service every month.

This is the type of advantage that Ms. Hughes said counts in producing well-rounded graduates, making them more attractive to educational institutions and employers.
