BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 19TH 2009 (CUOPM) – The governing St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party has condemned this weekend’s attack on two women one of them the wife of opposition politician, Mr. Bernard Welsh.

Deputy Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative for West Basseterre, Hon. Sam Condor disclosed Sunday night that he visited the Welsh Family earlier in the day to express “outrage at these heinous acts of sexual assault being perpetrated against our women in this country,” while former Speaker, Ms. Marcella Liburd has “strongly, unequivocally and without reservation condemn the violation of these two women.”

“We want to condemn it and we want to make sure that people desist from doing this wicked and evil thing. This is not a good thing for the country. It is not good for anybody,” said Condor at a political meeting of the party in the Shadwell/Pine Gardens Community on Sunday night.

Mr. Condor, who is also the Minister of Gender Affairs called on the nation to give their full support to the security forces.

“We want to ensure that we continue to give the police and other law enforcement officers our full support, because I believe that the best security of our country is when all of us, each and every one of us, take full responsibility for the security of one another,” said Deputy Prime Minister Condor.

Ms. Liburd, who is the Labour Party’s new candidate for the Central Basseterre seat in the upcoming general elections noted: “As a woman myself and as a mother, I need to say that I am compelled to come out and condemn these dastardly acts, these vicious acts of violence against women.”

“I want to place on public record our condemnation of these acts and we want to extend our prayers and thoughts to these to women and their families,” said Ms. Liburd a practicing lawyer.

Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has ordered a full and thorough investigation into both incidents.
