Police report increase in accidents close to curfew time

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has informed that there is an increase in the number of reported accidents in the Federation, and that the increase occured close to or during the curfew hours.

The curfew, which is still in place, was implemented as one of the measures to combat the spread of the Coronavirus.

While speaking during last evening's (Sept. 9) NEOC media briefing, Superintendent Cromwell Henry explained that too often law enforcement personnel had seen people driving at a very fast rate of speed  in order to get home before the curfew hours, because they were out too late at nights.

Though not providing statistics to support the Police Force’s position on the increase, Henry stated that most of the accidents had occured during the curfew hours and have resulted in injuries to many people and damage to their vehicles.

It has been reported on numerous occasions that drivers were seen speeding to beat the curfew deadline, but there have not been many reports of people being arrested for breaching the traffic laws.

“This increase in accidents suggests that persons are hurrying to get home before the curfew...with no regard for the road,” noted Henry.

The Superintendent reminded that people were not leaving their place of employment or their socialisation environment to get home on time.

Under the existing regulations, business operators are urged to close their establishments early in order for heir staff to get home on time.

Under the current regulations, business establishments are expected to close at midnight or one hour before the curfew to allow employees to get home on time.
