BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – INCREASED presence of police in the communities continues to bear fruit with the most recent being the seizure of a quantity of drugs and arrest of an individual who is believed to be responsible for the offence.

A police press release informs that on Sunday (Oct. 18) “a joint team of officers from the SSU, Drug Squad, Financial Intelligence Unit, Anti-gang Unit and the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, executed a search warrant on the premises of Delon James”, - a resident of Mattingley Heights – which led to the discovery of illegal items.

The release further explains that the warrant was for controlled drugs, arms and ammunition and documents “used in the commission of a crime”.

Among the items found were documents and a considerable quantity of compressed marijuana.  These, the police explain, were taken into custody and James was formally arrested and charged with marijuana possession and possession of marijuana with intent to supply.

Operations were also conducted last week in the McKnight and other communities, which resulted in several persons being stopped and search and the seizure of small quantities of “cured marijuana”.

The McKnight operation was conducted by a joint team comprising members of the SSU, Drug Squad and the Defence Force.

It took the form of a walkthrough and “during the exercise three search warrants were executed on premises at Fort Thomas Road and Fiennes Ave for illegal drugs arms and ammunition. Nothing illegal was found. Fourteen persons were stopped and searched; one vehicle and ten abandoned houses and empty lots were also searched. Small quantities of cured marijuana were found, but no one was made accountable”.

Other operations last weekend took place in District ‘B’ communities including Old Road, Sandy Point, Tabernacle and Cayon.

“Search warrants were executed on premises in Sandy Point, St. Pauls and Godwin’s for stolen goods illegal drugs arms and ammunition. A number of electronic and other household items suspected to be stolen were seized from these premises and 9 persons were arrested on suspicion of larceny.”

During those operations, a press release informs, three persons were arrested for “disorderly conduct by fighting”, and Shorna Que Pemberton of Downing Street, Sandy Point was taken into police custody and subsequently charged with “obstructing the police in the execution of their duty”.

Another individual, who was being sought by the authorities for “whom outstanding maintenance warrants were in existence”, was taken into custody during another of the operations conducted last week.

Police indicate that during that operation, 128 vehicles were “stopped and checked for traffic violations” in addition to the 20 persons who were stopped and searched “on suspicion of having illegal drugs, arms and ammunition”.
