St Kitts Nevis Sailing Association Barts Bash 21

By: St Kitts Nevis Sailing Association, Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts --The St Kitts Nevis Sailing Association was represented in the international event of Barts Bash 21. The 2 members of the Association, the Nevis Aquatics and Sailing and the St. Kitts Yacht Club came together on the water in front of Spice Mill, Cockleshell Bay on Sunday September 12th 2021 to participate in the Andrew Simpson Foundation’s flagship annual event. This event is inspired by the memory of Olympic Gold and Silver medalist Andrew ‘Bart” Simpson MBE, who passionately believed that everyone should have the chance to try sailing and enjoy the many benefits that it brings.

Between September 12th and 13th over 1000 venues in 63 countries participated in this unique regatta. St Kitts & Nevis gave 29 participants the opportunity to race within one of the 3 classes of dinghys: Optimists, FS Fevers and Hobie Wave. There were 3 main races that was set on the formal course which was a 1500m up wind down wind as set by the Caribbean Dinghy Championship, as part of the Barts Bash 21. Due to COVID restriction challenges our regional regatta, the Caribbean Dinghy Champions, which is held in Antigua, chose this format as a way of each venue having its own races within guidelines and then each sailor’s times are uploaded into the website to bring all the results together. On Sunday as well as 3 main races for all classes we also had 2 Optimist races for our new young sailors in the spirit of inclusion. Throughout the day we had 9 Optimists, 7 Hobies and 2 RS Fevas race. Our 2 RS Fevas have unique teams which are made up of 2 male and 2 female teenagers with a representative from each island on each team.

It was a great opportunity to be a part of the Barts Bash that gives back to the sailing communities in many ways. For example they have assisted us in donating life jackets but do assist many different ways. A donation has been made to the fundraising and the true spirit of everyone going out and enjoying some sailing regardless of their level of sailing was achieved. St. Kitts Nevis Sailing Association is also pleased to be able to represent the federation in this international regatta.
