BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- A magnitude 5.3 earthquake last evening (Sept. 24) jolted several sections of St. Kitts and Nevis as well as a number of neighbouring islands.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), there were two earthquakes and residents in St. Kitts had reported feeling the first one at 8:40 p.m. yesterday (Sept. 24) in the Stapleton/Monkey Hill and Basseterre areas.

Meanwhile, the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Center had recorded a second earthquake also on the same day.

The Seismic Research Center stated that it was a 5.3 magnitude earthquake, which was felt at around 11:12 p.m. (local time) or 03:12 (UTC).

The quake was located at Latitude: 16.86 North, Longitude: 61.14 West with a depth of 10km.

It was reported to have been felt at 81 km Northeast of Point-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, 83 km Southeast of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda and 175 km North of Roseau, Dominica.

These are the latest in a number of earthquakes that have struck the region in recent weeks, from Trinidad and Tobago in the South to Haiti and the Dominican Republic in the West.

Haiti is still reeling from a 7.2 quake that devastated several sections of the island.

It has left homes flattened, hundreds of people dead, thousands of them homeless and without proper food, shelter and in need of humanitarian assistance.

That was followed by a 4.2 earthquake that struck the island on September 19.
