NEMA Press Release: Hurricane Sam

By: NEMA, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 25, 2021 (NEMA) -- NEMA and the St. Kitts Met Office are closely monitoring Hurricane Sam as it moves across the Atlantic Ocean.

As of 5:00 p.m. today, Saturday 25th September, 2021 the eye of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 13.3 North, longitude 48.5 West or about 924 miles East-Southeast of the Leeward Islands. Sam is moving toward the West-Northwest near 10MPH (17 KM/H). A slower motion to the West-Northwest is expected over the weekend, followed by a turn to the Northwest on Monday.  Maximum sustained winds have increased near 140 MPH (195 KM/H) with higher gusts.

Sam is a category four hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening is expected throughout tonight. The estimated minimum pressure is 960MB (28.35 inches).

Based on current information and analysis, Hurricane Sam is expected to pass at a safe distance away from the Leeward Islands and the British Virgin Islands, with little or no impact to the islands.

There will be low level threat to the islands, as it relates to the effect of winds, cloudiness and showers.

However, given the dynamic nature of tropical cyclones, any shift to the south could bring the system closer to the islands. It is therefore important that the system is continuously monitored and the public tune in to the relevant updates.

Residents are still being asked to stay tune to NEMA and the St. Kitts Met Office as we monitor Hurricane Sam.
