Two disturbances being monitored in the Atlantic Ocean

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ALL eyes remain focused on the Atlantic Ocean as two disturbances are being closely monitored for development within the coming days.

Though focus is still on Hurricane Sam, which is expected to safely pass and not impact the northern Caribbean, there are still concerns out at sea.

The first development, which left the coast of Africa late last week, is producing disorganised showers and thunderstorms located several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.

Meteorologists said environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for further development of this disturbance, and a tropical depression is likely to form in a few days while it moves westward to west-northwestward at five to 10 mph over the central tropical Atlantic.

On the outlook, the National Hurricane Center has given the disturbance a 40 percent chance of development over the next two days, with high 80 percent recorded for the next five days.

The Florida-based NHC said the second development, which is currently leaving the coast of Africa, is expected to further develop over the next few days.

In its morning report, forecasters at the center explained that a tropical wave is moving offshore the west coast of Africa and into the far eastern Tropical Atlantic.

Winds are forecast to be conducive for gradual development, and a tropical depression is likely to form in a few days. This development also has a  40 percent chance of formation.

Meanwhile, local officials are still urging residents to be wary of Hurricane Sam even though it is projected to miss the region entirely.
