BASSETERRE ST. KITTS (October 21, 2009) -- Parliamentary representative for St. Christopher #7, Dr Timothy Harris, has told senior citizens in his electoral district that their long lives were a sign that they had found favour with God.
“Old age is a blessing from God,” observed Dr Harris. “You have much to be thankful for. You have passed the critical threshold of three (3) scores and ten. Today you are of good spirits, and you can speak, move, hear and feel. God has been good to you.”
Dr Harris, who is also the Federal Minister of Finance, International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, made the remarks last week Wednesday (October 14) while visiting the eldest resident in several villages of his constituency as part of the programme to celebrate the month of the elderly.
He was accompanied by Mrs. Anne Wigley, Supervisor in the Department of Social Development, Sylvannie Phillip and Agatha Welcome, constituency-based health care providers and Annie Mc Barnett, a returning national.
Dr Harris presented a certificate of recognition to each of the senior citizens and a fruit basket. Minister Harris said that the gift was a token of the government’s appreciation for the outstanding contribution of the elderly.
Among the elderly visited were Alfred Herbert of Belle Vue, Francis Williams of Mansion, Lucretia Browne of Molineux, William Foxe of Phillips and Lillian Hill of Tabernacle, all whom warmly received the Minister for the fact that they know him well having visited them in the past.
