The Alexandra Hospital received a gift which would enhance the early detection of learning capabilities in children while the St. James Primary School at Butlers Village received equipment to enhance its Information Technology class.
The Primary School received a HP Printer from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Rehabilitation Unit at the Hospital received a cash donation of $4,200 from Caribbean Cable Communications, a telecommunications provider on Nevis.
During the presentation, Youth and Sports Coordinator explained that the gift was to show the Ministry's appreciation for use of the school's premises during its 2005 Easter Programme. As part of their appreciation, the Ministry had also posted classroom identification signs at the school.
The gift was presented by Ms Jacqueline Brookes Acting Principal Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports who thanked the students and staff for use of the premises.
While receiving the gift, School Principal Ms Vertilie Perkins thanked the Ministry and assured the Ministry Officials that it would be used for the benefit of the students. She also took the opportunity to thank the officials for the new classroom identification signs adding that since they had been posted they had made it easier for classroom identification purposes and they had also enhanced the school's appearance.
During the second presentation which took place at the Alexandra Hospital's Administrative Block, Manager of Caribbean Cable Communications Mrs Carleen Barzey said the donation was part of funds that would normally be used by the company to purchase tokens for their clients during Christmas.

Following a decision to use the funds to the benefit of the entire community, Mrs Barzey said it was decided that these funds would be donated to non profit or charitable organisations and for Christmas 2005 the Alexandra Hospital was one of two organisations selected to share equal portions of the money.
Nurse Averil Walters, Head of the Rehabilitation Unit explained that the donation would go toward the purchase of an audiometer, a piece of diagnostic equipment that would be used to assess spoken language disabilities.
"We have quite a few children who really need language assessment from time to time. Some children have hearing problems and they are unable to hear and process information adequately. So if we do some testing we would better be able to treat the condition and then improve the learning capabilities of the children,"she said.
The Rehabilitation Unit headed by Nurse Walters, offers speech, physical and occupational therapy to children and adults.
Hospital Administrator Mrs Joslyn Liburd who received the cheque on behalf of the Rehabilitation Unit thanked the Company for the gesture.
