NEMA to launch community outreach programme to engage persons of all ages

By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 08, 2021 (SKNIS): Being prepared is key to a community’s ability to respond and recover from any disaster and this requires engagement and coordination with relevant stakeholders. In this regard, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) places a high priority on community outreach, working with communities around the island to be proactive in reducing vulnerability to various hazards.

“There is an initiative that is ongoing that we intend to roll out which is going into the communities and engaging persons of all ages asking them questions,” said NEMA’s Public Relations Officer, Michelle Rodrigues, during her appearance on the October 06 edition of ‘Working for You’.

Ms. Rodrigues noted that it was important to engage all ages to get persons connected to NEMA.

“One of the things that I have observed is that I feel and have recognized that there are still many persons who still are not connected to us and are missing our information and that is very important for us that we try to correct that culture not only with the disseminating of information but keeping the public engaged as to who NEMA is and what NEMA does,” she said.

The initiative to go out into the communities to engage the general public is in line with NEMA’s mission which is to coordinate and facilitate pre and post-disaster management activities at the community and national levels in order to minimize vulnerability and mitigate against the impact of disasters on life, property and the well-being of residents of St. Kitts and Nevis.
