World Post Day 2021 Address by Minister of Post, Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Shawn Richards

By: Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Shawn Richards, Address

On October 9th, 2021, postal operators globally will celebrate World Post Day. This year’s theme is ‘Innovate to Recover.’ This year’s theme is very appropriate in light of the challenges the global community continues to face with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Postal Services has had its share of challenges during this pandemic. Locally partial and total lockdowns have affected our operations as the government tried to control the movement of persons to control the spread of this virus. Notwithstanding this, the local post was operational on a reduced staff capacity.

Regionally and internationally the reduction of flights arriving into St. Kitts has reduced the volume of mail entering the federation. Despite internal and external forces the St. Kitts and Nevis Postal Services continued to be resilient and adapt to our changing world.

I would like to highlight the essential role that postal workers provided by ensuring that we receive our letters, small packets, parcels in a secure and timely manner across the federation.

As we continue to navigate through this COVID-19 Pandemic, innovation of the postal sector is key to its recovery. The post offices will have to be innovative in the way it provides its services to its customers. The pandemic has taught us that we should try and utilize services that are online and minimize physical contact where necessary.

We will provide a platform where customers can pay for their US Mailbox service via National Bank and other commercial banks. For our month of activities, we will launch our website which will provide a wealth of information about our services and useful forms that can be printed from the website. During the month of October, we will undertake a number of initiatives to both develop and empower our staff such activities will include but not limited to staff development sessions, we will share important and pertinent postal tips via the local media platforms. During this month of activities, it’s important that we show appreciation to our customers as they are the backbone of the postal sector.

In conclusion, I would like to thank the hardworking staff at the St. Kitts and Nevis Postal Services for their dedication and commitment to the postal sector especially during this pandemic and would like to wish everyone a Happy World Post Day 2021.

Thank you and may God continue to bless our federation.
