Prime Minister Harris participates in special meeting of CARICOM Heads on COP26

By: (OPM), Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, October 11, 2021 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris today (Monday, October 11) participated virtually in the Twenty-second Special Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) which focused primarily on the upcoming COP26 meeting.

The Twenty-sixth Conference of the Parties (commonly referred to as ‘COP26’) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will take place from October 31 – November 12, 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland.

At Monday’s meeting, CARICOM Heads sought to solidify the Community’s positions that will be adopted at COP26.

Ahead of the October 31 – November 12 meeting, leaders were advised that the world will meet its target to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees Celsius. However, COP26 represents a politically significant moment for accelerating COP ambition of reaching its target of 1.5 degrees Celsius and to fulfill the Paris Agreement.

The meeting is also expected to discuss issues relating to accelerating the green recovery, closing the financial gap of the 2020 commitment to deliver US$100 billion in climate finance per annum; ensuring solidarity for adaptation and loss and damage, as well as completing the Paris Rulebook and moving it towards implementation.

The negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on advancing the climate agenda will also be discussed at COP26.
