Young people encouraged to take a leadership role in the fight against COVID-19

Hon. Jonel Powell, Minister Of Youth
By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 01, 2021 (SKNIS): Young people in St. Kitts and Nevis are challenged to take a leadership role in the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic as the nation pursues a return to normalcy.

There has been debate in many circles about the impact of the deadly virus on the youth population and what is the best way to protect them. The United States Food and Drug Administration gave emergency use approval for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children above the age of 12 years in May 2021.

The topic was recently debated by the St. Kitts National Youth Parliament Association on the moot: “This House believes that the mandatory vaccination of all citizens without severe underlying health issues is the most effective way to reach herd immunity during this COVID-19 pandemic.”

During an address to mark the observance of Youth Month in St. Kitts on November 01, 2021, Minister of Youth, the Honourable Jonel Powell, noted that the debate allowed for the youth voice to be heard on this very important issue that affects every age and gender.

“It is imperative that young people realize the integral role they play in the fight against COVID-19 and the nation’s journey back to normalcy. In April 2020, UNICEF launched its COVID-19 Diaries, a platform for young people to share their success stories and experiences of navigating life through the pandemic,” the minister stated. “So, continue to educate yourself and your peers on the most effective weapon we have – the vaccination. I implore parents to arm your children by getting them vaccinated so that they may encourage other young persons to do likewise.”

Minister Powell noted that during the month there will be two forums that specifically allow for the nation’s youth to engage directly with him.

He encouraged persons to see youth for “the individuals that they are, for their unique qualities, their accomplishments, contributions and their vast potential. We must encourage them to dream, yet teach them to be grounded,” he added.

Youth Month is being celebrated under the theme “Youth! The Future and the Now. Youth Month 21.”
