BASSETERRE, ST. Kitts -- THE Federation was again shaken by an earthquake that occurred just off its coast last evening.
This time it was a magnitude 5.3 on the Richter Scale, which shook the earth around 6:00 p.m. and caused no early reported damage to St. Kitts or surrounding islands.
The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre reported that the quake occurred between Latitude 18.58 North and at Longitude 62.32 West, with a depth of 10km.
It occurred 149km north-northeast of Basseterre, 171km north-northwest of St. Johns, and 273km north-northwest of Pointe-a-Pitre.
There have been a number of earthquakes occurring in the region in recent weeks. St. Kitts and Nevis has not been spared the jolts, as a 5.1 quake rattled on October 23. UWI said that it occurred at Latitude 17.43N and Longitude 61.98W at a depth of 85 km.
