BASSETERRE, St. Kitts --AFTER 17 years wearing the maroon of the West Indies, Dwayne Bravo has hung up his international hat after the Caribbean side exited the ongoing T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates
Bravo, who is likely to still journey the world to play franchise T20, was lauded by Cricket West Indies (CWI) on his outstanding international career, during which time he helped win three ICC world titles as a member of the West Indies Men’s Team.
In a statement, CWI said the all-rounder, and former West Indies captain, announced his retirement from international cricket on Thursday. He indicated that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be his last time in the West Indies jersey and he has officially confirmed this with CWI.
Bravo made his international debut in April, 2004 against England in and has featured prominently in three world title triumphs – 2004 ICC Champions Trophy in England; 2012 ICC T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and ICC T20 World Cup in India.
In addition to his world titles, Bravo has been one of the West Indies critical all rounds, contributing with bat and ball to becoming one of the world’s leading white ball death bowlers and a valuable mentor for the next generation of West Indies players.
CWI President Ricky Skerritt saluted Dwayne on completing his illustrious international career.
“He performed admirably in all three formats and added value to all levels of West Indies cricket. He was a trailblazer in T20 cricket and set the standard for how the newest format of the game should be played. Dwayne’s talent, commitment, and dynamism thrilled fans of all ages and he was a star attraction for a generation of young cricket lovers.”
He added that Bravo “excelled and demonstrated his immense prowess with both bat and ball and created a legacy of top-quality performances. He will always be a true West Indian champion and we thank you for that.”
Bravo has played 91 T20 Internationals, taking 78 wickets, scoring 1,255 runs. The right-hander also played 40 Tests and scored 2,200 runs – with three centuries and took 86 wickets. In 164 One-Day International appearances he made 2,968 runs and took 199 wickets.
Bravo did not make much of an impact during their year’s world cup, as the West Indies failed to qualify out of the Super 12. At the end of the tournament the defending champions won one of their five matches.
