SPBS staged successful fundraiser

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- In a bid to continue its charitable work of assisting students in need and those within the communities of St. Kitts, the Sandy Point Benevolent Society (SPBS) held a successful fundraiser.

The group, which is made up of doctors, educators, and other prominent personnel from St. Kitts residing both in and outside of the Federation, provides scholarships and other educational opportunities for students on the island.

On Saturday (Oct. 6) evening, the group held one of what is expected to be a series of fundraisers for support to those in need. They gained support from two of the Federation's popular personalities - EK Flanders and Dejour - whom entertained during the evenings proceedings.

Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Education, Vincent Hodge who is a member of the society believes that the objective of the fundraiser was achieved by the organizers.

“I think essentially, we achieved what we set out to achieve. It was to create awareness and to raise some funds. From the donations that were mentioned and what we saw recorded, we would like to think that we would have hit the mark. It may not have been as much as we would like but there were some new scholarships that were announced,” added Hodge.

He revealed that a number of people came forward and pledged to make annual donations for varying scholarships.

The group was founded more than 20 years ago with the aim of providing educational support to the science department at the then Sandy Point High School now the Charles E Mills Secondary.

According to Hodge, overtime, that goal expanded to providing more support to the school and other students.

“Since then the group has expanded into general education, contributing towards human resource development in terms of offering scholarships to students who moved on to tertiary and recognizing those while in secondary school,” noted Hodge.

The SPBS also carries out community outreach in terms of contribution to churches, the hospital and other schools.

“So this is an opportunity for the organization to raise some funds to carry out these various programmes and we hope that it would be successful financially.
