Carnival fringe activities depend on COVID-19 task force

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- THE National Carnival Chairperson, Shannon Hawley, is assuring the general public that the released calendar of activities is only for events hosted by the National Carnival Committee (NCC), and a calendar with fringe activities will be released.

Staging of fringe activities depends on the nod of approval from the COVID-19 Task Force since fetes and other private events are not controlled by the Carnival Committee.

Since the release of the official calendar on Monday, a number of memes and satirical pieces were circulating on social media criticising the committee for the lack of private events and for some of the events on the calendar, including the ‘Bubble J’ouvert’.

Hawley, while speaking at the release and interaction on the calendar of activities last evening (Nov. 10), said that the opinions are welcomed feedback and that people have a right to express those. But she noted that “the calendar is the calendar for the National Carnival” and it highlights the core activities for the festival.

She reminded that Carnival is not only made up of the traditional activities but also those from the stakeholders who add to the festivities with their fetes and side events. It is against that backdrop that it was revealed that requests are before the task force for approval for those events to be staged.

“...hopefully, shortly we would be in a position to release the calendar of stakeholder events. And that is what we are most excited about, and get most excited about… I can say that we already started our discussions with several traditional stakeholders - what we call fringe events…” added Hawley.

She assured that “there will be those fringe events” once they get the go ahead from the authorities.

The task force has been wary in recent weeks over the staging of social events even as the number of positive cases of the virus continues to significantly decrease. But concerns are being expressed with the slowdown of the inoculation rate within the Federation. It has been stuck in the high 70 percent in recent times.

Despite that though, the NCC is pressing full steam ahead with its plans as according to Hawley, they are having daily meetings with the task force about the various plans to mitigate against an outbreak.

Meanswhile, when it comes to the ‘Bubble Jóuvert', the chairperson explained that the concept has been used around the region and the world over. It will be staged at a single spot with a number of artistes performing throughout the day.

“And for us again, working in collaboration with the task force and trying to come up with what creative way we can come up with to host a J’ouvert, but host a J’ouvert that is safe, that is as safe as possible, taking into consideration what J’ouvert represents,” said Hawley. Adding, “...the concept is this Bubble J’ouvert which will be a J’ouvert not on the streets but in a secure venue featuring as many of the local talents as possible. Similar to what we had last year…”
