Breaking News: West Indies/USA to stage 2024 T20 World Cup

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -  THE Caribbean will stage another major international cricket event when the 2024 T20 World Cup heads back to the region - this time including the United States of America.

     

    Announcement of the hosting came from the world governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), in an official media statement today, which disclosed all the host nations for the 2024-2031 cycle.

     

    During that period there will be eight new tournaments, including the return of the Champions Trophy, to be played across 14 nations.

     

    The ICC said that the tournament, which will be played in June 2024, will go somewhere it has never been before, with the USA hosting the event alongside the West Indies, Which staged the action packed tournament in 2010.

     

    Cricket West Indies said that this announcement is part of a strategic partnership and vision of CWI and USA Cricket for the 2024 T20 World Cup. They announced that it is geared towards growing the game in the Americas by re-energising the sport with a new generation of fans in the West Indies and unlocking cricket’s potential in the USA.

     

    In a media statement on the announcement, CWI said: “The partnership and bid planning, which started close to two years ago, aims to deliver ground-breaking fan and matchday experiences that combine Caribbean carnival with the best of American “sportainment” and breaking new ground on digital innovation and integration.”

     

    In addition, this forms part of the thrust of the longer term goal is to accelerate cricket’s growth as the world’s Number 2 sport driving towards mainstream status in the United States and enhancing cricket’s prospect of inclusion in the Olympic Games, to be hosted in Los Angeles in 2028.

     

    Ricky Skerritt, CWI President said: “CWI welcomes this announcement by the ICC. It means simply that the Caribbean has been handed another opportunity, in 2024, to host a premier world cricket event. And this time it will be in partnership with our neighbours to the north, USA Cricket, led by my colleague Paraag Marathe.” 

     

    In February 2025, Pakistan will host the Men’s Champions Trophy.  During 2026, India and Sri Lanka will host the Men’s T20 World Cup, before another first-time major event in 2027.

     

    In October/November 2027, Namibia will host the Men’s Cricket World Cup for the first time alongside Zimbabwe and South Africa. 

     

    The oceanic nations will In October 2028 jointly stage the T20 World Cup, while 12 months later India will host the Champions Trophy.

     

    In 2030, England will share T20 World Cup hosting duties with Ireland and Scotland. It will be the first time since 1999 that Ireland and Scotland have hosted a major global cricket event. The final scheduled event, in October/November 2031, will be the Men’s Cricket World Cup, played in India and Bangladesh.
