Fleming: Douglas administration undermining electoral process

Roy Fleming
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, October 24th 2009 (PAM Secretariat) - “The deliberate and unilateral approach being taken by the Prime Minister (PM) of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas must be seen as the latest evidence that the Douglas-led Labour administration is determined to undermine the electoral and democratic process in the Federation in his effort to remain in power.”

So said the PAM’s Constituency 2 Representative, Roy Fleming, on Friday, October 23.

In expressing his party’s disgust in the manner which the Federation’s affairs are being handled, Fleming said that this is viewed as an unilateral imposition of undemocratic by PM Douglas. He stressed that Dr. Douglas is aware that the public has lost faith and hope in his leadership.

Fleming said it is time that the PM respects the rights and wishes of the people whom he claims to love, thus ensuring that a government of the people’s choice is elected. He stressed that workers are hard pressed, as they seek to make ends meet while battling social, economical and political challenges as many civil servants are grossly underpaid despite being hardworking.

Fleming pointed out that his party has been calling for a more accountable approach by the Government in addressing national issues. He noted that it is total “injustice and an insult to impose on the residents and citizens of the Federation a dictatorial approach which saw strong resistance from former Government Minister the Hon. Dwyer Astaphan”, who stepped down last year.

He also claimed that there are reportedly infightings within the party as Ministers Dr. Timothy Harris and Sam Condor attempt to resist the style of leadership of the PM.

Fleming noted that his party hopes that the Douglas-led administration would see the light and recognize that the public truly deserves mature, responsible, accountable and creative leadership as they join in battling the many ills facing the world today.

The PAM’s Representative said that despite the effects of the global financial and economic crisis, his party has already devised a plan of action which would bring significant benefits to all concern.

Fleming emphasised that tourism and financial services, which are significant revenue earners and job providers in the Federation, have been severely affected by the crisis. He said that the Labour Party, due to a lack of vision and foresight, could not explore creative and innovative leadership styles.

Fleming said that people in the Federation are undergoing a severe and harsh crisis due to the current economic depression, noting the irresponsible and unaccountable leadership of the PM. He noted that the real sector has been affected, as a fall in finances in many sectors has resulted in less revenue for the Federation.

Fleming recommended that the government should respect the wishes of the people and call federal elections. He declared that the longer the PM Douglas takes to announce elections the people would be further depressed and frustrated.
