BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- AFTER receiving numerous complaints from residents of items missing from their packages while at the Customs and Excise Department, the Government has allowed for officers to begin wearing body cameras while executing their duty.
The disclosure was made this morning (Dec. 3) by the Department’s Public Relations Officer, Keishma Griffith, while appearing on the ‘Voices Programme’.
Residents have expressed disgust on both social and mainstream media of theft or missing items from their packages from their barrels and or boxes when shipped to the Federation.
But the PRO noted that, following investigations, in several instances they had found the items were not shipped or they were inadvertently placed in another person's package.
The PRO also noted that many persons who would have received the additional items did not return them or indicate to Customs that they received same.
To this end, the use of body cameras were instituted to provide another level of confidence in the agency as officers carry out their duties.
It was stated that the cameras must be turned on at all times while packages and barrels are being examined.
Meanwhile, Griffith is calling on members of the public to lodge any report they might have against the agency pertaining to missing items.
