Nevis Sports Minister commends U-19 trio

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS - THE Minister of Sports in is the Nevis Island Administration, Eric Evelyn, has congratuled the three young Nevisians who made the final cut to be part of the West Indies Under-19 squad for next month's World Cup.

Onaje Amory, Carlon Bowen-Tuckett and Jaden Carmichael are the three youngsters who were selected as part of the 15-man West Indies squad for the tournament that will be played in the Caribbean.

The three players are likely to feature at some point during the tournament and are also expected to play a part during two of their three opening matches in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Evelyn congratulated the trio on their selection to the squad after a lengthy training process that saw them travelling to the United Kingdom for practice matches and also a number of camps in neighbouring Antigua and Barbuda.

He described their selection as a proud moment for the people and the tiny island of Nevis, highlighting that the island should be proud to have made up one-fifth of the team that will represent people of the region from Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago in the south to Jamaica in the west.

“It is a great day for sports in Nevis as we have gained not one, not two, but three players selectees to the West Indies Under-19,” noted Evelyn.

Anderson Amurdan is the fourth player selected as part of the travel reserve. He will be one of several players from which the team can choose in the event of an injury and who will not have to be quarantined before competing.

Based on Amurdan’s performances over the last several months, the Minister believed that he should have made the squad but is still thankful for the selection of the trio.

“We are justly proud of the achievements of our young cricketers. I must say that I am disappointed that we did not have four. Because from the performances that we would have seen over the past months, we should have had four…We are thankful that the fourth is in the reserve and you never know that he may get a game,” noted the Minister.

The West Indies will play their games in the Federation at Warner Park and the Conaree Playfield.

The Federation will host 18 matches across the Warm-ups and Group stages as part of a four-nation tour for the tournament, with Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Antigua and Barbuda being the other hosts countries.

The warm-up and competition games will be played at five venues when the tournament bowls off in the Federation next month.
