Governor General Saluted as Elders' Role Model

SKNIS
Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 26, 2009 (SKNIS): The Governor General of St. Kitts and Nevis was acknowledged for his resilience and leadership as he celebrated another birthday, placing him well in his eighties.

Falling during the Month of the Elderly, His Excellency Sir Cuthbert Sebastian’s birthday, (October 22) took place during the period when the Ministry of Social Development is hosting a workshop designed to move forward a Policy on Aging for the Federation.  As such visiting consultant Raymond Jessurum was on hand when Minister responsible for Social Development, Honourable Rupert Herbert presented a fruit basket and plaque to Sir Cuthbert. Mr. Jessurun acknowledged that the Governor General was a brilliant example of how elderly persons can be useful to the community.  He noted that this was stressed by the United Nations when they referred to “A Society of all Ages,” which is the theme for the Month of the Elderly.” Consultant Jessurum emphasized that not only Sir Cuthbert, but Minister Herbert as well, were model senior citizens that demonstrated that the elderly were still of worth.

Similarly, Minister Herbert noted that while some persons choose to take the day off on their birthday, Sir Cuthbert chose to carry out his normal work duties.  He told Sir Cuthbert that he was pleased to see that he was leading by example and demonstrating that there was need to be productive even on one’s birthday.

The Governor General responded appreciatively, registering that he was pleasantly surprised by the visit.  He said that he had been told that Mrs. Wigley wanted to see him and quite unexpectedly she arrived with an entourage.

Activities for the Month of the Elderly continue with a Picnic at Black Rocks on Tuesday, October 27.
