COVID forces postponement of ODI series to June

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOLLOWING the discovery of more COVID-19 positive cases within the West Indies squad currently in Karachi, Pakistan, a determination was made to end the tour.

The Pakistan Cricket Board and Cricket West Indies made the joint determination as five additional cases arose on Wednesday (Dec.15), thus further depleting the touring party, and forcing the postponement of the One Day International leg of the tour.

“...taking into consideration both the teams’ welfare as well as limited resources in the West Indies side for the ODIs, it has been agreed that the series, which forms part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League, will be postponed and rescheduled for early June 2022,” a CWI press statement read.

According to the two organisations, this would provide the West Indies with an equal opportunity to field their best available players for the World Cup qualification matches.

The West Indies team members who returned negative results following Wednesday’s PCR and the Rapid Antigen tests, were expected to depart today (Dec. 17) following last evening’s final T20 game.

“Those who have tested positive will complete their isolation in Karachi before their travel arrangements are finalised to allow them to rejoin their families in time for Christmas celebrations,” the statement noted.

Concerns grew after several members of the Windies squad tested positive upon arrival in Pakistan, thus the spread of the virus among the squad.
