CWI sacks Selectors Roger Harper and Miles Bascombe

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

Phil Simmonds to head Interim Panel

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AFTER a disastrous T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and heavy criticism from the media across the region, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has informed that it would be looking for new selectors at the end of the year.

That comes as they have indicated a refusal to re-sign lead selector Roger Harper and Miles Bascombe after their contracts expire on December 31, and CWI will commence a recruitment drive for the new Men’s Selection Panel in January.

With Ireland and England set to visit in January, Cricket West Indies has set up an interim panel that will be headed by Coach Phil Simmonds.

“An Interim Selection Panel has been established, with Head Coach Phil Simmons at the helm, along with the captains in the respective men’s formats. Jimmy Adams, CWI’s Director of Cricket, will oversee the process,” CWI said in a media statement.

Since the selection of the World Cup squad back in September during the Caribbean Premier League, Harper and company came in for heavy criticisms, especially with the selection of several senior players and the exclusion of a number of younger players who performed credibly during the tournament.

West Indies, who were the defending champions, would go on to crash out at the league stages after a dismal showing. That meant that for the 2022 tournament in Australia, the Caribbean side would now have to play in the first round of the tournament.

The announcement came several days after the Caribbean boys failed to win a game in the T20 series in Pakistan, going down 3-0.

Commenting on the announcement, Adams said: “We want to thank Roger and Miles for their work and dedicated services to West Indies cricket in the last two years, as members of the Men’s Senior Selection Panel. Selecting West Indies teams for international competition is a very challenging assignment, and both gentlemen performed their roles with transparency and dignity.”

Harper, in commenting on the failure to have his contract renewed, said: “I would like to thank CWI for the opportunity to serve West Indies cricket in the role of Lead Selector and I wish the organisation the very best for the future. I would also like to thank all those whose efforts and cooperation helped me to perform my role efficiently. Special thanks to Miles for his professionalism and teamwork. God bless.”
