Icons-Road March Edition tonight

By: Sugar Mas 50, Press Release

Sugar Mas 50, Monday, 21st December, 2021 --  The expectations are high for tonight’s Road March Edition of Icons, which has quickly become one of the most anticipated events for carnival in St. Kitts & Nevis.

It will be a night of calypso and tempo, as a star-studded lineup of artistes hit the stage to deliver performances that will generate flashbacks of past J’ouvert mornings.

In the spotlight will be some of the songs that ruled the road and captured the imagination and support of revellers.

The decision to focus on past Road March songs and artistes, comes as part of the overall effort this year to pay tribute to all those who have contributed so much to the development of the premier cultural event on the entertainment calendar of St. Kitts & Nevis.

The attainment of 50 Years of National Carnival is being celebrated with a menu of first-class events and activities that seek to embrace all aspects of the festival, including pageants, Panorama, Calypso and Soca Competitions, and special awards.

In line with this effort, this year’s Icons will feature performances from King Konris, Mic Stokes, Contenda, Small Axe Band, and Grand Masters, all of whom have won Road March titles during 50 years of Sugar Mas.

Contenda and Konris have earned a unique spot on the pages of Road March history. They are the first and only father and son who have secured titles in this category.

Contenda’s victory was in 1986, with a song called Living in De Band. However, that tile was jointly shared with  De Coach, whose selection, De Boops, also dominated the airwaves and the parade streets. This too was historic, as the first and only joint Road March title in the history of the country’s carnival.

Konris on the other hand won his only title in 2010 with a song he called, Unstoppable Force.

However, the band that has won the most Road March titles, is Grand Master, which has secured victory on 10 occasions. The closest rival is Ellie Matt & The GI’s Brass, with seven.

The first Road March song, at the start of National Carnival in 1971, was Play Your Mas, by Sundar Popo.

The Icons will be broadcast on radio and television and streamed via social media (Facebook and YouTube), but the public is also invited to be there in person.

Icons will be followed on Wednesday by the Swimsuit Competition and the Soca Monarch Finals on Thursday.
