U-19 players test positive for COVID-19

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WITH all of the teams already in the Caribbean for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 Cricket World Cup, at least four players have tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of official warm up matches.

Though the tournament will bowl off on Friday (Dec. 14), warm-up games are said to get underway around the region this weekend, including in St. Kitts and Nevis.

However, just before the beginning of those games, four Zimbabweans were confirmed to have tested positive upon arrival in the Caribbean.

The Zimbabwe Cricket Board recently confirmed the announcement and explained that the unnamed four players, who had taken part in a four-match youth one-day series against the Ireland Under-19 side in Barbados that ended on Sunday, are well and asymptomatic.

Their test results returned positive on Monday (De. 3) and they are now self-isolating, and are expected to be re-tested before they could join the full squad that is currently in the Federation to begin their quest for the trophy.

The African side is expected to play two warm-up matches in the Federation - January 9 and 11 - before beginning their group play.

Concerns have been mounting across the region with the growing number of confirmed positive cases of COVID.

Barbados had recently confirmed the presence of the highly contagious Omicron Variant of COVID-19.

A similar occurrence is taking place in St. Kitts and Nevis where  group matches will take place. Just yesterday (Dec. 5), the Federation reported 177 new cases of the virus.

The Federation is part of a four-island tour for the Cricket World Cup, which bowls off on January 14, and will see the likes of England, West Indies, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Scotland, Bangladesh,  Australia and Sri Lanka featuring in Basseterre.
