Parks and Beaches takes protest to MOH

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ALLEGATIONS of dishonesty and sexual assault were some of the issues raised by staff members of Parks and Beaches that prompted them to down tools and take their protest action to the Ministry of Health yesterday morning (Jan. 17).

A group of approximately 50 individuals staged a vociferous protest through downtown Basseterre from their Irish Town base to the Ministry of Health office in Bladen's, chanting they want justice.

While at the Ministry, a group of supervisors were able to gain an audience with the Permanent Secretary and other officials, including the Labour Commissioner, to iron out their grievances.

The members of staff at the agency believe that they are being taken advantage of and, according to the Glenn Buffong, they have had enough of it when their boss was not being properly forthcoming with monies owed to them.

He explained to reporters that they were promised monies that took several months for them to receive. But the proverbal camel's back was broken when he refused to issue an apology to the aggrieved.

“...We have been advantaged a lot by this boss,” he  noted.

All of this comes as the agency is responsible for ensuring that the streets of downtown Basseterre and its surrounding remain clean. And Buffong told reporters that the protest was not because they did not want to work, but rather to bring their issues to light and have them remedied.
