Second man charged for McKnight double murder

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A second man was charged for the double murder that occurred at Lower Thibou Avenue, McKnight on January 11, 2021.

     

    Charged with the murder of Lamonte Heyliger of Shear Lane, McKnight and Jahquan Merritt of Fort Thomas Road, McKnight is 25-year-old Jelani Duncan of Cabbage Tree, Cayon, who is said to be a member of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force.

     

    Following an intensive investigation, he was charged on Saturday, 29, 2022 with Murder, Possession of Ammunition and is currently in police custody.

     

    According to a police release, Duncan is the second person to be charged in the matter.

     

    The first one is 35-year-old Tabari Roberts of Lower Thibou Avenue, McKnight, who was charged on January 15, 2021.

     

    Sometime after 6:00 p.m. on January 11, 2021, police had responded to a shooting incident at Lower Thibou Avenue in McKnight.

     

    On arrival, the officers found the motionless body 20-year-old Heyliger with multiple gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead on the scene by the District Medical Officer.
     
    Police also stated that a second individual, 19-year-old Merritt, had sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to the JNF General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injury on the following day.

     

    Investigations at that time revealed that Heyliger, Merritt and several other persons were in a shed when an individual shot both men. 
     
    Heyliger and Merritt were the first two homicides for that year following 10 recorded in 2020.
