Post- Cabinet Briefing for January 24, 27, 28, 31 January, 2022

By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 03, 2022 (SKNIS): The Team Unity Cabinet of Ministers met on January 24th, 27th, 28th, and 31st, 2022, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris. During their meeting, Cabinet deliberated on matters which could impact the Federation.

    •    Cabinet was brought up to date on a post-mortem on the re-opening of face-to-face classes in all the schools and also received a report on the Irish Town Primary School. The Cabinet was also given an insight into the supply chain disruption issues and efforts of the Ministry of Trade in coordinating with the Ministry of Finance to set up mechanisms to alleviate hardship within the community.

    •    The National COVID-19 Task Force presented to Cabinet on the situation in the Federation in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it seems that the country is on the downward curve of the fourth wave. As a result of the downward trend, Cabinet accepted the recommendations of the Task Force to have fewer restrictions in some areas of sporting activity and also agreed to be more flexible in the area of cruise arrivals, however, most COVID-19 protocols must still be observed as the Federation cannot afford to let down its guard. The Commissioner of Police also reported that major crimes were trending downwards.

    •    The Cabinet was treated to a presentation for a major hotel chain, which is interested in operating in the Federation.

    •    The Cabinet also had the benefit of a presentation for using cryptocurrency within the Federation.

    •    The Ministry of Sustainable Development presented a very detailed report to the Cabinet on its preparation for the population and Housing Census, which will be running from mid-March to the end of May. The official virtual launch will take place in late February after which community outreach will ensue. Training of enumerators and data collectors is ongoing. The core census activities will take place from May to June and entities such as the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, government ministries and NGOs will all be involved in bringing an accurate and timely census conclusion to the Federation.
