CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - ALLISON BERGAN, alias Twobal, of Bath Village, was slapped with a three month imprisonment when he appeared in the Charlestown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to answer charges of stealing.

Bergan, who pleaded not guilty, stole a quantity of beverages from George Weeks, also of Bath Village, on October 19.

Weeks told the court that around 12:45 a.m. on the day in question, he heard a tumbling outside his house and on looking through a window he saw someone taking drinks from his vehicle and putting them into a black bucket he keeps in his yard.
According to Weeks, he went outside, picked up a machete and chased the defendant and even “fired” a chop at him, but the weapon was too dull to do Bergan any harm.

Weeks also told the court that his drinks had gone missing on many occasions and he knew that one day he would have caught the thief.

“What really hurt me is that I does give the defendant anything he want to eat when I got it. I know him like I know my own kids,” Weekes said.

Also testifying was Police Corporal Jones, who said he received a report from the complainant, was told certain things and he acted on them. Jones stated that on arrival at the scene, he collected a pair of sandals and a number of assorted drinks, such as sodas, malts, ginsengs, Red Bull, Guinness, Ting and Mackenson.

The Corporal also stated that he immediately went in search of the defendant but did not find him. He however found him later and while cautioning him the defendant said that he was drunk in a Spanish bar at the time he was accused of stealing the drinks.

Bergan, who was not represented, told Magistrate Yasmine Clarke that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and he was begging not to be sent to jail.

“Whatever George wants for his drinks I will pay him because I am working.”

Magistrate Clarke told the defendant if he was drunk there was no way that he could have escaped from Weekes.

“I am sending you to jail for three months.”
