The Ministry of Sustainable Development through the Department of Physical Planning and Environmental held its Annual National Beach Clean-up Day on September 25th 2009. The purpose of this activity was to remove and catalogue debris that have been carelessly or intentionally discarded in local waterways and subsequently use the data to add to pollution databases worldwide. The department also tried to raise awareness of the increasing global problem of pollution of marine areas with this activity. St. Kitts and Nevis are not the only countries that take part in this initiative; the International Coastal Cleanup Day, coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy, is recognize annually by at least seventy-four (74) countries and fifty-four (54) US states and territories.
It is largely due to the efforts and generosity of the many contributors that this year’s Annual Beach Clean-up was a tremendous success. The department of Physical Planning and Environment will like to recognize and publicly thank all of the contributors and sponsors that have made, and continue to make the Annual National Beach Clean-up victorious.
