BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WARNER PARK has reportedly been given the nod to host games in the 2022 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season as the organisers are eyeing four territories to host this year’s tournament.
That was confirmed by CPL’s Chief Executive Officer Pete Russell, who told NewsRoom Guyana that St. Kitts and St. Lucia have been confirmed as venues for this year’s tournament scheduled for the same August/September window,
Guyana is one of the other venues currently on the list and organisers are said to begin discussions with officials in that country to host matches.
While speaking with Freedom FM last month, Federal Minister of Sports, Jonel Powell had indicated the Government’s willingness to host the entire tournament.
“I would have had a conversation with Pete Russell, the CEO, just this week in relation to St. Kitts hosting the CPL this year. We hope to come to some arrangement by next month when I would then take the final negotiations to the Cabinet to make a determination on whether what we have negotiated is in our best interest or makes sense,” he said.
The Government has not given full disclosure on the total cost for staging the event in 2021, but Minister Powell told reporters that the Government did make a return on its investment in the first week of the event.
Minister Powell told Freedom FM that it was the Government’s intention to host the entire tournament this year.
“...what I can say is, what we have been presented with is very, very exciting,” Powell said last month.
Efforts to reach the Minister up to press time for a comment on the situation were unsuccessful.
