BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - EVEN though the vaccination rate has slowed in St. Kitts and Nevis, the Government has received a new batch of Pfizer BioNTech Vaccines from the United States to continue it inoculation drive.

This was confirmed by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Hazel Laws, as she provided an update on the COVID-19 situation in the Federation.

She revealed that over the last two days, the Federation received its third of three tranches of vaccines from the United States.

Those vaccines were part of a large donation by the Joe Biden-led administration In Washington DC to help Latin America and Caribbean countries incombatting the spread of the virus.

The latest donation was a batch of 18,000 doses and the Government is expecting a batch of 3,000 doses of the AstraZeneca Vaccine from the CARICOM Secretariat.

“The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis over the past two days received the third tranche of the Pfizer/BioNTech Vaccines from the United States Government; so, over these past two days, we received a total of 18,000 doses of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccines,” Dr. Laws disclosed at last evening’s NEOC media brief.

The latest AstraZeneca doses are expected to arrive today (Feb. 17).

Meanwhile, the Federation reported an additional 20 new cases as of last week, according to Dr. Laws, who pointed out that it is lower than the 42 that was previously reported.

Over the same one-week period, health officials reported that 12 persons were released, compared with 208 during the previous seven-day period.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are almost at the end or out of this fourth wave or fourth outbreak of COVID-19…Our numbers, meaning newly diagnosed cases, are trending downwards; the numbers are declining,” she added.

Since the start of the fourth wave of the virus on December 25, the Federation has reported 2,686 confirmed cases with 2,628 deemed to have recovered.
