Kingston, Jamaica. February 25, 2022/CMM Inc….The premier fundraising event of the David “Wagga” Hunt Scholarship Foundation was held Sunday evening, February 20, 2022. The exciting event which was was held virtually and streamed to audiences worldwide on the foundation’s YouTube channel saw hundreds of patrons in the Diaspora and locally tuning in. The event featured the scholarship recipients past and present.

Emcees for the evening were Leighton “Fyah” McKnight, Territory Leader, PricewaterhouseCoopers Jamaica and committee member and radio broadcaster of Power 106 FM, Dervan Malcolm – They kept the evening fun and entertaining and encouraged donations and support of the foundation’s programs. The inspiring evening was held under the distinguished patronage of Her Excellency Audrey P. Marks, Ambassador of Jamaica to the United States of America and Principals; Dave Myrie (Kingston College)and Albert Corcho of (Calabar High School).

The ambassador noted that the last two years have been difficult, especially for the education sector, and she urged everyone to redouble their efforts to safeguard the welfare of future generations. Georgette Hunt, widow of David Hunt, for whom the scholarship is named, spoke of David's impact on the lives of young men. “We need this [the scholarship] for our young men … to advance themselves, as this not only helps them but the country.”

With over US$106,000 (J$16 million) disbursed to 35 scholarship awardees since 2009, DC Chapter Co-Chair Christopher Hunt -- brother of David Hunt -- spoke of his pride in the foundation’s accomplishments. Hunt said that there are currently 23 scholarship recipients to whom J$2.3M has been disbursed for the 2021-22 school year. Four Grade 8 students have been presented with Chromebooks, while four Grade 12 students have been presented with laptops courtesy of PricewaterhouseCoopers, Jamaica.

Co-chair of the Jamaica Committee, Arnold McDonald thanked all for the “overwhelming support” given to the foundation over the years and invited viewers to enjoy the evening’s presentation. Viewers were treated to a showcase in which present and past scholarship recipients provided a window into their unique journeys. Current recipients, who were asked to list three qualities about themselves and to name an individual they admire and why, gave very insightful responses. Tenth grader Romaine Christie of Kingston College stated that the person he admires the most is his father. “He handles every situation so calmly and is able to come up with a well thought out solution. I absolutely aspire to be like that and that is why I admire my father so much.”

Andrew Campbell, also of Kingston College (Grade 12), revealed his three best qualities as being proactive, honesty, and intelligence --which allows him “to apply knowledge effectively.” “I admire this about myself because it heightens my confidence.” And being proactive allows him to “take control of situations without being told to do so.”

Young Grade 8 student of Calabar, Blake Williams admires his mother, Dionne Stennett. “She makes sacrifices to make sure all my needs are met.  She denies herself and puts me first.” For Gregory Kerr, Grade 11, also at Calabar, his three best qualities are his leadership skills, smart thinking, and working well with others.

Alumnus Miguel Morrison, Class of 2015, Kingston College, thanked the foundation for “putting me on a path to achieve my goals.” Miguel, who attends the University of Manitoba, is in his fourth year of study for a Bachelor's in Kinesiology after which he plans to obtain a Masters in Physiotherapy.

His counterpart from Calabar High, Jehvaun Faulder, Class of 2016, thanked the foundation.  “I learned that no one who achieves success does so without the help of others. The Hunt family through the David ‘Wagga’ Hunt initiative is my team, the army behind my continued success.” Faulder is a second-year student in Actuarial Science at Bentley University. Both Morrison and Faulder were the first recipients of the scholarship fund.

A highlight of the evening’s proceedings was the recognition of this year’s honoree, Mrs. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, CD. The three-time Olympic gold medalist, businesswoman, and philanthropist is one of Jamaica’s most decorated female athletes. She spoke of her Pocket Rocket Foundation as being there for student-athletes “to help them dream beyond their current circumstances…to give them a launching pad for a better life.”

An impressive program of reggae's top acts – Fab5, Stephen “Cat” Coore, Gem Myers, Lovindeer, Dre Island, Christopher Ellis, and D’Major -- gave freely of their time to deliver a thrilling entertainment package for the event. All performed out of the Penthouse Studio in space donated by owner Donovan Germain.

In addition to making donations, patrons were able to bid on weekend vacation packages graciously provided by the Sandals/Beaches group and Couples Hotel. For their indispensable support in sustaining the scholarship program the foundation thanks local sponsors VM Group, Proven Wealth, Gibson-McCook Relays, and Crimson Dawn; overseas sponsors Steuart Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, Spencer’s Financial, and McIntosh and Associates, among others.
