Dr Telbert Glasgow Co-ordinator of the UWI Long Distance Education Programme on Nevis.
    CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (January 30, 2006) --
Co-ordinator of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Distance Education Programme on Nevis Dr Telbert Glasgow, disclosed Monday that that the programme has seen a significant increase in the number persons signing up to pursue degrees at various levels.

Registration closes about the middle of February and we have seen an increase in the number of students who are showing interest in the programme.  Last year we had 50 people registered in the programme and this year so far we have an additional 20 or so.  So we should be up to 70 persons registered,

"The Programme began in Nevis in 2000, so we are just about six years old and we have seen quite a remarkable increase in the number of people who register for the programme compared to six years ago," he said.

According to Dr Glasgow, the programme offers courses in Business Management, Accounting, Economics, Educational Administration, Construction Management, Counselling and Family Medicine and this year, Compensation Management, Operations Production and Survey Design and Analysis would be added.

He said the programme would continue to increase as the University moved into a different level of delivery.

In this programme we have been using a two prong approach.  We have been delivering the material to the students via a tele conference system and we have been doing it also by the use of local tutors.

"This year we are adding a new element to it where we are introducing an online component to the delivery of the material to the students.  So as we get over the teething problems in the online delivery, we would see more programmes coming on stream so that the students could have a wider variety of programmes from which to choose," he said.

The Nevis Island Administration who over the years had invested millions of dollars in education, facilitated setting up the UWI Distance Centre at Marion Heights in Nevis to give Nevisians the opportunity to complete a full degree without undue disruption to personal and professional life.
