BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AFTER several years of talk and a commission being established, public servants could be in line for an increase in their salaries this year.
The suggestion came from Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris during his address at Sunday’s People’s Labour Party (PLP) Convention at the Patsey Aller’s Playfield.
He revealed that he had asked the Financial Secretary “to consider what it will cost to give you, our workers, an increase in wages and salaries.
Since the expiration of the last agreement where a five percent increase was provided over 10 years, there has been no discussion of a further increase. Instead, the Government provided a double salary to all public servants and auxiliary workers.
“ I see money coming! I see money coming!” Harris exclaimed.
The Government had established a commission to review minimum wage within the public service in St. Kitts and Nevis.
SKNVibes News recently asked Premier Mark Brantley to discuss the increase and he noted that it is the responsibility of the Federal Government in Basseterre.
Dr. Harris did not elaborate on the discussion surrounding the possible increase in public servants salaries and when it will come on stream.
An increase at this time will be most welcomed as many people have indicated that food prices are on the rise due to the shipping issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
