Duggins, Henderson on  SKNLP Elections Slate

Samal Duggins
By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AS the tri-party coalition Team Unity publicly airing out its dirty laundry on a regular basis, the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) has been galvanizing its base in preparation for what it describes as an impending  general elections.

The SKNLP used a block party type atmosphere to officially unveil its two new candidates to its supporters and the general public last evening (Apr. 3).

With popular entertainers and performers gracing the stage, Attorney-at-Law Marsha Henderson was reaffirmed as the Party’s choice to go up against Jonel Powell in Constituency Two, while Samal Duggins was officially revealed as its choice for Constituency Four.

Dr. Terrance Drew, Leader of the SKNLP, welcomed the two candidates to the slate as the Party sought to rebrand its image and outlook after suffering a humiliating 6-2 defeat at the 2020 General Elections.

In her address, Henderson reflected on the role former Member of Parliament Marcella Liburd played in the Constituency and pledged to revitalise the area after it was lost in 2020.

“I pledge to be your representative, your voice, your servant, your defender and champion, and the next Member of Parliament for Central Basseterre, Constituency Number Two,” said Henderson.

The attorney noted that she is tired of seeing the people of Central Basseterre shortchanged and neglected.

“I am tired of seeing the people of Central Basseterre ill-treated. For too long we have experienced the blatant disregard of our people. It is time to ‘change the change’. We will not be daunted!” she exclaimed.

A more charismatic individual, Duggins reflected on his upbrining, from whence he came and the struggles to get where he now is.

There were talks leading up to the 2015 General Elections that he was expected to run in Constituency Three, but that did not come to fruition. And he used the last several years to listen and communicate with the people of that Constituency.

Duggins noted that he is ready to fight for the people in the area and bring all dreams to a reality.

“I hear and I understand your plea, your plea for less politics, less promises, more positivity…It is with this in mind that I stand ready to fight for the hopes and dreams of every young man and woman. I stand ready to fight for the dreams of every ghetto youth,” noted Duggins.

Former Party Leader, Dr. Denzel Douglas also welcomed the two new candidates and indicated that the organisation is moving in the right direction.

As the war of words continue within the ranks of the Government, there is no clear indication that there will be a general elections anytime soon. The next General Elections is constitutionally due in 2025.
